Small Transitions Games

Transition #1

Set up: 3 lines in a good distance for the size of the field that you have practice and 2 pug goals between the middle line and the side lines one each side

Drill: The exercise begins with the coach giving pass to a defender finish first touch, then he give the pass to the second defender also finish first touch. after that he connects the third ball to one of the 3 rows and plays 3v2 to make the goal in the big goal and if the defense steal the ball can make the goal in the pug goal

Coaching points:

. Balance your body to take a good shot

. Check how the ball is coming for you before you take it

. On the 3v2 make the best decision to pass for who is open 





Transition Drill #2

Set Up: We gonna use half field, with rectangle(18m x 25m) over the box line, two smalls goals on half field 

Drill: That will be 4v4 in side the rectangle + 1 outside who will support the attacking team. Attacking team just can score from long shoot in side the rectangle and defense team as soon regain the ball should open up and spread out in whole field and try to score at two small goals 

Coaching point:

  • Be compact and stay 
  • High pressure 
  • Quickly transition
  • Find an empty space 




Transition Drill #3

Set up: We gonna use half field, with rectangle(15m x 25m) over the center line, smalls cones to demark players positions and 8 soccer balls 

Drills: Basically the defense team will try to keep the ball in side the rectangle and as soon the attacking team regain the ball they have 10 sec to connect the ball with one of the attacking players out side the rectangle and move forward to score, two players from each team can join the play after the ball are passed for attacking and play 5v4 

Coaching point:

  • High pressure 
  • Quickly transition
  • Find a empty space 




Transition #4

Set up: Make a diamond with players from the same team facing each other.

Drill: Attacking players exchange passes until the coach talks go. When the coach talks goes the player with the ball decides the side that will play and plays 2v1 and the other defender has to return as soon as possible to play 2v2. if defenders steal the ball they can score on the opposite side

Coaching points:

. Quality pass

. Be in your toes

. Heads up

. Smart decision





Transition #5

Set up: Make a 20x15 yards field. Two lines and one pug goal.

Drill: The goalkeeper starts the exercise by giving the pass  to one of the lines and the first player of each line plays against the defender 2v1 to make the goal in the big goal and if the defense steals the ball he can make the goal in the pug goal

Coaching points:

. Create a passing option 

. Don’t be offside 

. Drive the ball until the defender go in your way to open more space to your partner when you pass the ball

. Heads up




Transition #6

Set up: Make a 25x20 yards field. 3 lines and 1 pug goal. Add 2 lines for defender besides the big goal

Drill: The coach starts by giving the pass to the middle line and the player goes driving the ball and kicking, the coach adds the second ball and plays 2v1 to score in the pub goal, then throws 3v2 in the direction of the big goal and only finishes the round when the ball comes out the side or end line.

Coaching points:

. Create passing lines

. Quick attacking moment 

. Overlaps, Given and goals

. Long shots 




Transition #7

Set up: Make 2 lines with cones for coordination and make 2 lines with defenders.

Drill: When the coach talks go the offensive players make a coordination that the coach decides and the defense go running and go around the cone. after that the coach connects the pass in the middle player and plays 3v2, after finishing the 3v2 the coach connects a new ball and plays 4v3.

Coaching points:

. Good coordination 

. On 3v2 the outside players go wide and giving a passing option

. Quality pass

. Make the best decision with and without the ball 





Transition #8

Set up: field 40x20 yards starting with 2v2 plus 2 goalkeepers and two lines outside one team each half of the field

Drill: The game comes 2v2 on the field and the coach decides which team he connects the pass to. regardless of the team that started with the ball, the team that finishes first, the opposite team enters and already makes a 3v2 transition. after 3v3.4v3 and ending with 4v4

Coaching points: 

. Play with your partner and try to create 2v1

. Quality pass

. Fast but smart transition

. Get back as soon as you can




Transition #9

Set Up: We gonna need two squares (10m x 10m), and 8 soccer balls  

Drill: we gonna play 2v1 to move forward and transfer the ball to another square where we have a chance to score 

Coaching point:

  • Find space to pass between the lines 
  • Quickly pass 
  • High pressure 
  • Quickly reaction
